Illinois ID Cards
The state of Illinois provides its residents with three different types of identification cards which are:
- Senior ID Cards- for those Illinois residents that are over 65
- Disabled ID Cards- for Illinois residents that are disabled
- Under 65 ID Cards- for all Illinois residents that are under 65
When applying for an Illinois ID Card, you must apply in person at your local Secretary of State Driver Services office. Seniors have the advantage of obtaining a Senior ID Card for free and the card will not have an expiration date. For the senior that no longer drives, this is an ID Card is a great advantage as it provides important identification of the person and is valid for all situation that a senior would normally show their Illinois driver’s license.
Under 65 ID Card
For Illinois residents that are under 65 and do not drive the Under 65 ID Card is a great means to obtain identification. This is also a great form of identity if your driving privileges have been revoked or suspended. The Under 65 ID Card is good for five years.
The Under 65 ID Card is often issued to children who are in need of proper identification. Times when a child travels on planes is a perfect example of when an ID Card would be needed. The parent of the minor child will have to provide acceptable proofs of the child’s identity. Visit for a list of acceptable forms of identity.

Disabled ID Card
Disabled Illinois residents can apply for a Disabled ID Card that not only provides a photo ID of the person but also lists the classification code of the person’s disability.
To apply for a Disabled ID Card your doctor must complete an Application for Disabled Person ID Card for free on your behalf.
The Disabled ID Card is free, but the disabled ID Card holder will need to be renewed every five years.
Acceptable Proofs of Identity
When applying for your Illinois ID Card, you will be required to show proof of identification. The state of Illinois requires that you present four forms of identification if you are a first time applicant. The forms of ID must be originals. There are situations where notarized or certified copies may be accepted, but this will be the discretion of the Driver License examiner.

Renewing an Illinois ID Card
The state of Illinois requires that all ID Cards, with the exception of the Senior ID Card, be renewed every five years. The ID Card will expire on the card holder’s birthday. The fee to renew your ID card will be $20.
Because Illinois does not handle any matters through the mail or Internet, you will be required to renew your ID Card in person at your local SOS Driver Facility office.
Replace Your Illinois ID Card
If for some reason you have lost, damaged or had your Illinois ID Card stolen, you must apply for a replacement in person at your local SOS Driver Facility office. At the time of application, you will be required to produce two acceptable forms of identification.
For all those that holding a Senior or Disabled ID Card, the replacement will be free. However if you are a holder of an Under 65 ID Card, you will need to pay the replacement fee which will be $10 for all those younger than 16 and $20 for everyone else.
